Ten Years Beyond Baker Street

By Cay Van Ash

"It was ten years beyond Baker Street. The great detective was living in restless retirement among his bees in the wilds of Sussex. But an old warhorse will ever thrill to the trumpet of battle, and when a distraught Dr. Petrie begged his help to rescue Nayland Smith from the clutches of the fiendish Dr. Fu Manchu, Holmes, though reluctant could not resist. When the sinister Oriental’s evil minions unleashed their vile devices against the great man himself, the issue became more clearcut. Though the stakes may have included not simply the survival of Nayland Smith but that of the Empire itself, the stark fact was that the game was to be played by two geniuses for good and ill in a battle for a very personal supremacy."

Dr. Fu Manchu was the creation of author Sax Rohmer. The character has been prominent for many years in books, film, TV, and radio. Fu Manchu was a criminal mastermind. He hatched complicated and devious plots. He preferred not to use guns or conventional weapons but instead liked to employ knives, poisons, snakes, spiders and the like. Fu Manchu was an agent of the secret society the ‘Si-Fan’. The Si-Fan was funded by the drug trade and white slavery. The character of Fu Manchu became a stereotype for the “Yellow Peril”. Yellow Peril is a racist term used to express Western fears of Asian immigration, culture, and economic power. As early as 1932 complaints were made about the racism in the books and film adaptations. After 1940 the U.S. State Department requested that no further books or films be produced because China was an ally in the fight against Imperial Japan. It amazes me that young people I talk to have no idea that China was once an ally. In the book “1984” by George Orwell the government would re-write history to make it easier to control the masses. Now that’s not necessary because people just forget. It’s happened as recently as the wars in the Gulf. Saddam Hussein was a friend and ally. When Israel bombed the Iraqi nuclear facility the U.S. was the first to object. Probably because we provided the materials and know-how used to construct the facility. We frequently tasked satellites to provide Saddam intelligence in the ten year Iran-Iraq war. The intelligence was used to help the Iraqis target weaknesses in the Iranian defenses. In Afghanistan we are now facing the Taliban and the Mujahideen that we armed and trained to fight the Soviets for us. And don’t forget that Mother Russia who we were fighting using the Mujahideen were our friends and partners in the defeat of Hitler and the Nazis. Enough politics. Fu Manchu was able to extend his life with the use of a formula that he created. Many characters have been based on or owe credit to Fu Manchu. The villain in “Hawaii Five-O’” called Wo Fat is an example. In the cartoon series “Jonny Quest” the nemesis is Dr. Zin. John Carpenter’s “Big Trouble in Little China” had Lo Pan. The Marvel comics character “The Mandarin” yet another example. After Sax Rohmer’s death there have been authorized continuation novels written with the last one being published as recently as 2012.
