The Great Wave off Kanagawa
By Katsushika Hokusai
I first saw a copy of this woodblock print from 1832 in Mama Kwan’s Tiki Bar in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. I was fascinated by the print. I learned that Katsushika Hokusai was one of the first Japanese artists to become popular in the west. He had done a series that depicted scenes near Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji can be seen in the background of this print as it can be seen in all the prints from that series. I obtained this copy of the famous and iconic print for my Tiki lounge. The next year during my visit to the Outer Banks and to Mama Kwan’s Tiki bar I saw that the Hokusai print had been removed. So, now, as far as I know, my little Tiki lounge is the only Tiki bar sporting a copy of Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”.
Balinese Girl
By Jan Hoowij
Jan Hoowij (1907-1987) was a well known portrait painter. He was an American born in Holland. I purchased this print in 1977 pre-dating my interest (obsession?) with Tiki. It now seems appropriate for my Tiki lounge.
